Cheers! A gude Willie-waught and a happy New Year to You!
Earlier this year (2014) I was expressing my surprise at the number of recent song lyrics about women with large behinds (at least three, I think) and was taken aback to be asked, "Who listens to lyrics anyway?" Remembering the dread that overcame me when, as a child, I stood in church singing "I will make you fishers of men", my mind's eye viewing men slowly transforming into scaly fish, perhaps there is some merit in not listening to lyrics. Anyway the local newspaper printed the lyrics of Alud Lang Syne:
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne*?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye'll be your pint-stoup!
and surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae run about the braes,
and pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,
sin' auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae paidl'd in the burn,
frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
sin' auld lang syne.
CHORUS
And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
and gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak' a right gude-willie waught,
for auld lang syne.
Hey, but what's this about a gude-willie waught? It does sound a bit naughty doesn't it? Looking it up (Google is wonderful) it seems it fits in with the drinking theme of the song - it means a good draft of ale. So here's a cheers to you, a gude-willie waught, and a Happy New Year to you too.
May 2015 be a great year for you and all those dear to you.
