Since I am not an atheist, this is not relevant to me. However, I
think everyone should be free to choose whatever religion they like.
If Atheism is someone's denomination, so be it. As long as that person
is the only one likely to be hurt greatly by such a religious choice,
most people probably would not care... although some might try to
argue (rightly or wrongly) in favor of a more healthy worldview.

The purpose of religion is to control others. Sometimes that is good, but I think that in general, it is a bad idea.

Okay, I would not argue about what you claim to be the purpose of
religion... although the same thing could be said about many
institutions, even including the public education system. However, I
think it is more important to think in terms of religion's primary
feature, that which may be used to distinguish one religion from
another. And, in that respect, I would argue that religion's primary
trait is the imposition of dogma. It is because of that aspect of
religion that I am firmly opposed to it. I cannot think of any
circumstance under which the large-scale imposition of dogma is
healthy for humanity. And, having said that, I don't see why theism
should be equated with religion any more or less than atheism. Both
can be and often are religious in nature. However, in respect to
theism, I know that it can transcend dogma (and hence religion). In
respect to atheism, I'm not so sure.
